FARAWAY BAY
We fly in, first along the Ord River and then cutting across dramatic, remote Kimberley country sliced by rivers which bleed north to the Timor Sea, until I see land that looks like fingers held up against the sun. In the web of one of these is Faraway Bay, winner of five WA Tourism Awards and the three-time winner of the unique accommodation category nationally, in the Australian Tourism Awards, including the
most current, 2008.
Intrinsic to The Bush Camp at Faraway Bay's appeal is its position. It is aptly named (and was so long before Baz Luhrmann came up with Faraway Downs for the movie Australia).
Owned and run by Bruce and Robyn Ellison, and with staff like guide Steve Mclntosh who've been there virtually from the beginning, Faraway Bay feels personal. You feel like you are staying with friends, not just "checking in and checking out". The cabins are comfortable, the food is excellent, and just being at Faraway Bay is exceptional.
A two-day package (two days and two nights, departing day three) in a standard cabin is $2370 per person. They are from Kununurra (but there are packages from Broome and Darwin) and include pick-up from accommodation and scenic air transfers, all activities and use of all facilities (guide, fishing trips and 13m cruise boat) meals, wine, beer, soft drinks, plus transfer from Faraway Bay airstrip to The Bush Camp at Faraway Bay. There are four and six-day packages.
